The Backstory

Journey is an online learning platform designed to help participants launch their ventures. It offers multimedia lessons, team challenges, and a unique rewards system where users earn “gemstones.” These gemstones can be exchanged for prizes, workshops, and services provided by our partners. Additionally, Journey connects users to mentorship programs, job opportunities, and other valuable resources, creating a gateway to a broader ecosystem of support.

My team conducted generative research to craft a seamless course creation experience for Journey. The intuitive design enables users to channel all their energy into teaching content.

My Role:

Project Management: Managed projects using Trello and Google Suite.
User Interviews: Conducted user interviews using Google Suite and Figma.
Analysis: Used FigJam for conducting analysis.
UX Design: Utilized Figma for UX design tasks.

The Problem

To initiate the development of a new course, instructors are currently required to utilize a course creation tool that lacks user-friendliness and intuitive navigation, thus limiting their ability to personalize the course content.

Comparative Analysis

Since our Comparing Thinkific, Udemy, Teachable, and 360Learning involves looking at several aspects such as their target audience, customization capabilities, pricing, course creation and management features, and the level of interaction and engagement they support. Here’s an overview based on general characteristics and capabilities of these platforms:

Thinkific

Strengths: Highly customizable, user-friendly, strong integrations.
Weaknesses: Limited advanced marketing tools.

Teachable

Strengths: Simple to use, excellent sales/marketing features, flexible pricing models.
Weaknesses: Limited customization options.

Udemy

Strengths: Large audience reach, diverse courses, user-friendly for instructors and students.
Weaknesses: Limited instructor control over course material distribution and student engagement

360Learning

The team interviewed respondents who had a stake in creating an online course. Some were teachers and some were directors of education within a nonprofit. The interviews were semi-structured with intent of discerning the needs of course creators.

I’m not a tech person. I love technology when it makes life easier, but I don’t to want to spend much time learning it. It’s just more like “How can I use this to be efficient?

Canvas is good but easy to get lost in in. It’s like a file saving system where you’re looking for the one thing you want to find and kind of have to keep digging around until you find it.

It’s not the most functional always. It has a lot of issues when you download it or when you go to formatting.

It is visually not attractive or super exciting. It feels like a typical LMS system where all the folders are just lined up.
